Decoding the STRUCTURE OF OET EXAM

Listening

Part A: Consultation Extracts – Multiple-choice questions based on healthcare professional-patient consultations.
Part B: Presentation or Interview – Multiple-choice questions based on a recorded presentation or interview on a healthcare topic.
Part C: Presentation extracts.
Marks for Listening sub-test:
Part A – 24 marks
Part B -6 marks
Part C -12 marks.

Reading

Part A: Skim and Scan – Skimming through short texts to locate specific information through expeditious reading task .(15 minutes)

Part B and C: Multiple Choice Questions – Answering questions based on longer healthcare-related texts which are careful reading tasks. (45 minutes).

Part A – 20 marks
Part B – 6 marks
Part C -16 marks.

Writing

Writing a letter (usually a referral, transfer and discharge letter) based on provided case notes, demonstrating communication skills in a professional healthcare context. 5 minutes of reading time will be provided along with another 40 minutes to write the exam

Speaking

A warmup session is held along with two role-play scenarios simulating typical healthcare professional-patient interactions, assessed on communication effectiveness. For each one, you have three minutes to prepare. Each role play lasts about five minutes.
